All my life, I've dragged a sketchbook around with me wherever I go. My sketchbook has until recently been kind of a private journal of my experiences, but really it's much more than that. I also use it to work out ideas for posters and other projects. I started bringing the sketchbook along to live music performances in my youth because it impressed the girls, and because I can't dance. If it's a really great venue, I get a certain sensation of space, and that's what I try to capture in a sketch- the spatial and cultural experience of the event. The thing I love about architecture and music is the effect it has on people when they're in it. When I enter a room, I figure out where the best place is to get the complete view. Then, when I start to draw, I visualize where the outside corners of my view will fall on the page. The floor and ceiling must be in the picture, and I try to get as much in as possible. The amount of positive feedback I've received from doing this has been far too much to simply leave my sketchbooks on my shelf. I have gotten big reactions from people when they see me sketching. They are sometimes amazed that within a few minutes, I can often describe a pretty complex scene. This reaction still surprises me- I don't know why, but I'm always happy to hear it. Most of the pieces you see here were completed in two hours or less. Some of them will soon be offered as limited edition prints. Let me know if you are interested in any of them in particular. At another point in the near future, I'll be putting these drawings and more into a book. Please click on an image to see it larger, and scroll through them. |
